Veedeo: “Go Do” by Jónsi

For those of you who are die-hard fans of the Icelandic musical magicians Sigur Rós, you may be getting a little antsy for some new material now that two years have passed since the release of the group’s last album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, which threw the band into a completely new direction from where they were before. Well, sadly enough, the frontman/angelic vocalist Jónsi has reported that the group won’t be doing anything for a little while, as “everyone is having babies.”

In the meantime, however, Jónsi has been working on a solo project that seems to tie very nicely to the last Sigur Rós album. Simply titled “Go”, the record is sounding a little more on the organic side (e.g. the video up above begins with pan-flute), and it is set to drop in April. Jónsi will be embarking on a tour to promote the record, including a date at the Coachella Music Festival, but for now, a video for what will most likely be the second single (after “Boy Lilikoi”, which was released in December), titled “Go Do” has been released on Jónsi’s website— And right here!

The video has some pretty odd elements…as a lot of Sigur Rós things tend to have, with this one including various scenes involving birds and Jónsi in a pretty damn strange costume, beating the hell out of a box. Pretty great song though, I definitely recommend checking it out.

Veedeo: “Splitting The Atom” by Massive Attack

And yea, the trippy, freaky videos continue to come into existence.

In promotion of their forthcoming album, Heligoland, trip-hop legends Massive Attack have released a music video for the single “Splitting The Atom” which features Horace Andy on vocals. Technically, this song was already released late last year on the Splitting the Atom EP, along with three other songs featured on the groups newest record, set to drop next week, but this should definitely build some tension for the album, especially when paired with the VERY not-safe-for-work micro documentary released in December that featured the song “Paradise Circus (feat. Hope Sandoval)”.

The video itself is really all one still-frame, but it is explored (literally) in a very interesting way. It’s not too clear what’s going on at the beginning, and, I’ll admit, I still wasn’t too sure what the hell I was looking at during certain parts of it, but it’s a very mysterious and cool setup nonetheless.

And yes, that’s a giant bunny.

Now go watch it!

Review: A Chorus of Storytellers by The Album Leaf

A happy 10th, indeed.

4/5

If you have never heard of post-rock group The Album Leaf, it is not too much of a shock, but really, by all means you should have by now. The California-based group, led by singer/guitarist/everythingist Jimmy LaValle, is releasing this fifth album of theirs in honor of the ten years that The Album Leaf has been a musical entity, and these ten years have not been spent with the group just sitting on their ambient behinds, recording music every couple years. What with the headlining of the Metamorphose festival in Japan, the scoring of multiple movies, and an expansive world tour, the group has garnered quite the reputation.

However, with the release of A Chorus of Storytellers, now is still a great time to get into their music. The album is filled with some truly great vibes, especially on the opening two tracks “Perro” and “Blank Pages”, which flow together very nicely. Interestingly enough, vocal parts become a central focus on many of the songs on A Chorus, a characteristic that is commonly absent from ambient artists. The vocals on songs such as “We Are” or “Falling From the Sun” do a very good job of transforming the songs while still keeping the trademark Album Leaf sound.

The album is now out on Sub-Pop records, and I highly recommend giving it a listen (especially those of you who have studying to attend to— great thinking music). You can also check out “We Are” down below.

Early Review: Heligoland by Massive Attack

Smoother than a baby covered in butter.

4.5/5

Though it has been seven whole years since British trip-hop inventors Massive Attack released their last full-length studio album (the widely celebrated 100th Window), I can tell you now that, with the upcoming release of their fifth LP, titled Heligoland, it has been WELL worth the wait. The record has been rumored to be released for the past 5 years in each consecutive year so far, so it’s nice to FINALLY have some closure. And some truly badass-sounding closure at that.

The band started truly ramping up to release the album in August of 2009, with the release of the EP “Splitting the Atom”, which contained two tracks from Heligoland (“Pray for Rain (feat. Tunde Adebimpe)” and of course “Splitting The Atom”), along with two which are remixes of songs that appear on the full-length (“Psyche” and “Bulletproof Love”, the latter of which was later renamed “Flat of the Blade”). Personally, I’m not too big a fan of “Pray for Rain”, even though I want to be, what with its inclusion of the singer from TV on the Radio, but something about it doesn’t sit quite as well with me as I’d like.

However, my favorite song on the whole album was later set behind a mini-documentary produced by the group that had to do with pornography. The song itself, titled “Paradise Circus (feat. Hope Sandoval)”, makes a lot of sense for the subject matter; it is probably one of the sexiest songs ever produced. What with Sandoval’s breathy, cool vocals and a just plain awesome keyboard line, this song truly pushes the record to its best.

Another very important part of the record is the contribution that Blur and Gorillaz main man Damon Albarn makes to the record, appearing on the partially acoustic “Saturday Come Slow”. It feels like these two musical geniuses were made to do something together, it comes off really well in this song.

Heligoland will be released on February 8th on Virgin Records and I highly, HIGHLY recommend buying it. Trust me, it will be very worth your time.
