Showtime!: Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly w/ Hepcat @ In The Venue

Good.

God.

It’s really tough trying to even begin to describe the madness that was this show. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the concert scene in Salt Lake for a while, you know that it’s no big shock that Flogging Molly are back to play a show. After this show, they will have played a show once a year in Utah for the past four years in a row. You’d have to wonder after a while how they’re able to keep coming back, whilst also kicking ass and taking names…

Well, I found that out firsthand at the show last Friday.
For some odd, unexplained reason, one of Flogging Molly’s biggest fan-bases is right here in Salt Lake City, and dear lord was it obvious once they got on stage. (This still seems a little odd to me, but ah well, SLC is also apparently the second gayest city in the nation, pardon the pun, behind San Francisco. I really have no idea what to expect of this place anymore…)

A part of me feels like alcohol made much bigger fans out of everyone there as well, it just seems like that would make sense for an Celtic rock show, but either way, the many bruises I still have from that night tell me the fans here are true ones. Even more proof: you may notice that there are no pictures from the show on this post…which is due in part to my stupidity, but also to the crazy-assed dedication the fans have. I’d made my way towards the front for this one, which I figured was a great opportunity to take some good pictures for the blog…but then also turned out to be a great opportunity for my camera to get knocked out of my hands and launched into a mosh pit during their second song as well. I’ll have to figure out a way around that for future shows later…but just know that I tried for now :)

Another great vibe that was present at the show, as you will see in the poster up above, was the appearance of Hepcat, the reggae/ska devotees that formed in 1989. Both Flogging Molly and Hepcat toured together for the 2000 Vans Warped Tour and decided to rekindle that flame for a slew of 9 of Flogging Molly’s shows this September. Though I was only able to see the last 4 songs of Hepcat’s set, they delivered a very positive and all around energy-boosting sound that, though you would not always expect it, bridged the genre gap very nicely and readied everyone for Flogging Molly as well.

Here’s the setlist for Molly:

    3. Requiem For a Dying Song
